Lever chain hoists, also known as hand chain hoists or chain blocks, are manually operated lifting devices that utilize a chain and a lever mechanism to lift heavy loads. Here is an introduction to their use:

1. Structure and Components

Hand Chain: Used to operate the hoist by pulling, which in turn drives the internal gear mechanism.

Chain Wheel: Guides the lifting chain and transmits the force from the hand chain to the load chain.

Transmission Mechanism: Typically includes gears (worm gear or spur gear) that amplify the force applied to the hand chain, enabling the lifting of heavy loads with minimal effort.

Lifting Chain: Made of high-strength alloy steel, it supports the load and is designed to withstand heavy loads and repeated use.

Upper and Lower Hooks: The upper hook attaches to a fixed support, while the lower hook connects to the load. Both hooks are equipped with safety latches to prevent accidental disconnection.

2. Applications

Lifting and Moving Heavy Equipment: Ideal for lifting small to medium-sized equipment and heavy objects in workshops, warehouses, construction sites, and ports.

Tensioning Cables: Used to tighten guy wires and cables during the installation of structures like towers and masts.

Positioning and Adjusting Loads: Enables precise positioning and leveling of loads during installation and assembly tasks.

Emergency Lifting: Can be used in emergency situations where power is unavailable or when a portable lifting solution is required.

3. Types

Worm Gear Type: Offers higher mechanical advantage but is slower in operation and more prone to wear. Less commonly used in modern construction sites.

Spur Gear Type: Provides faster operation and higher efficiency, making it more suitable for frequent use in construction and industrial settings.

4. Operation Steps

Inspection Before Use:

Check the turning parts for flexibility and ensure there is no chain jamming.

Inspect the chain, hooks, and axles for deformation or damage.

Verify that the brake is reliable and that pins and other fasteners are secure.

Ensure the suspension rope and support are sturdy and stable.

Confirm that the hand chain operates smoothly without slipping or jumping links.

Check that the rated lifting capacity on the nameplate matches the actual load.

During Operation:

Initial Setup: Pull the hand chain backward to relax the lifting chain, providing sufficient lifting distance. Then, slowly lift until the chain is taut.

Checking Components: Inspect all parts for abnormalities and ensure the hook is secure before continuing to lift.

Lifting: Pull the hand chain evenly and steadily. Avoid sudden or excessive force to prevent damage to the hoist or load.

Horizontal and Inclined Operation: When using the hoist horizontally or at an incline, pull the chain in the same direction as the chain wheel's rotation to prevent jamming or derailing. Support the chain at the entry point to prevent sagging.

Load Handling: Determine the number of people required to pull the chain based on the lifting capacity. If the chain cannot be pulled manually, investigate the cause instead of adding more people to avoid accidents.

Prolonged Suspension: If the load needs to be suspended in the air for an extended period, securely fasten the hand chain to the lifting chain to prevent accidental release due to brake failure.

After Use:

Lowering the Load: Lower the load slowly and steadily to avoid sudden drops.

Storage: Store the hoist in a clean, dry place, away from moisture and corrosive substances. Regularly lubricate moving parts to prevent rust and wear.

5. Safety Precautions

No Overloading: Never exceed the rated lifting capacity of the hoist. Overloading can lead to equipment failure and serious accidents.

Uniform Force Application: Apply force evenly when pulling the hand chain to prevent sudden loads on the hoist components.

Avoid Side Loading: Do not use the hoist to lift loads that are not centered on the lower hook, as this can cause uneven loading and potential failure.

Regular Inspection and Maintenance: Conduct regular inspections and maintenance to ensure the hoist is in good working condition. Replace worn or damaged parts immediately.

Training: Operators should receive proper training on the safe use and operation of lever chain hoists.
