Operating a manual hydraulic forklift safely requires a combination of proper training, adherence to operational guidelines, and regular maintenance. Here’s a detailed guide to ensure safe operation:

1. Pre-Operational Inspection

Before using the forklift, conduct a thorough inspection to identify potential hazards:

Check for Damage: Look for cracks, bends, or wear on the forks, frame, and hydraulic system.

Verify Wheels: Ensure all wheels (load wheels and steering casters) rotate freely without wobbling or excessive noise.

Hydraulic System: Test the pump handle and release lever to ensure smooth operation. Check for hydraulic fluid leaks.

Load Capacity: Confirm the forklift’s rated capacity (usually marked on the frame) and never exceed it.

Brakes (if equipped): Test any parking brakes to ensure they engage properly.

Cleanliness: Remove debris, oil, or water from the forks and operating area to prevent slips or falls.

2. Proper Loading Techniques

Center the Load: Position the forks evenly under the pallet to distribute weight uniformly. Avoid overhanging edges.

Adjust Fork Width: If the forklift has adjustable forks, set them to match the pallet width for stability.

Secure the Load: Use straps or shrink wrap if the load is loose or likely to shift during movement.

Avoid Overloading: Never exceed the forklift’s rated capacity. Overloading can cause tipping or structural failure.

3. Safe Lifting and Lowering

Lifting:

Pump the handle slowly and steadily to raise the load. Avoid rapid pumping, which can cause instability.

Lift the load just enough to clear the ground (typically 5–10 cm) to minimize tipping risk.

Lowering:

Use the release lever to lower the load gradually. Avoid sudden drops, which can damage goods or the forklift.

Ensure the area below is clear of obstacles or personnel before lowering.

4. Maneuvering Safely

Speed Control: Move at a walking pace (≤5 km/h) to maintain control, especially when turning or navigating tight spaces.

Turning:

Make wide turns to prevent tipping. Avoid sharp turns, which can shift the load’s center of gravity.

Keep the load low during turns to improve stability.

Ramps and Inclines:

Traverse ramps head-on (never sideways) to prevent sideways tipping.

Push the forklift up ramps and pull it down (if going downhill with a load).

Obstacles: Avoid sudden stops or starts near obstacles. Use a spotter if visibility is obstructed.

5. Operator Posture and Ergonomics

Stand Position: Keep your feet shoulder-width apart for balance. Grip the handle firmly but avoid overexertion.

Back Straight: Bend at the knees (not the waist) when pumping the handle to avoid strain.

Avoid Reaching: Keep your body centered over the forklift to maintain balance. Do not lean or reach while moving.

6. Environmental Awareness

Clear Pathways: Ensure the operating area is free of debris, spills, or uneven surfaces.

Lighting: Use adequate lighting in dimly lit areas to see obstacles or personnel.

Pedestrians: Yield to pedestrians and use audible signals (e.g., horn) when approaching blind spots.

Weather Conditions: Avoid operating in wet or icy conditions if possible. If unavoidable, reduce speed and exercise extra caution.

7. Parking and Storage

Lower the Forks: Always lower the forks completely to the ground before parking.

Engage Brakes: If equipped, apply the parking brake to prevent unintended movement.

Stable Surface: Park on a flat, level surface to prevent rolling or tipping.

Secure the Area: Block off the forklift if left unattended in high-traffic zones.

8. Regular Maintenance

Lubrication: Grease moving parts (e.g., pivot points, wheels) regularly to reduce friction and wear.

Hydraulic Checks: Inspect the hydraulic system for leaks or air bubbles, which can affect lifting performance.

Wheel Inspection: Replace worn or damaged wheels immediately to maintain stability.

Cleaning: Remove dirt and debris from the forklift after each use to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth operation.

9. Training and Certification

Formal Training: Ensure all operators complete a certified training program covering theory and practical skills.

Refresher Courses: Schedule periodic refresher training to reinforce safe practices and address new hazards.

Supervision: Assign experienced operators to mentor new hires during initial use.

10. Emergency Procedures

Spills or Accidents: Immediately stop the forklift, lower the load, and secure the area. Report incidents to a supervisor.

Tipping: If the forklift begins to tip, do not jump off. Stay inside, grip the handle firmly, and lean away from the fall to minimize injury.

Fire Safety: Keep a fire extinguisher nearby if operating near flammable materials.
