Safety issues and solutions for manual hoists in operation

When operating manual hoists (manually operated lifting hoists), in order to ensure safety, attention should be paid to equipment inspection, operating standards, environmental factors, and personnel qualifications, and corresponding measures should be taken. The following are specific security issues and solutions:

1、 Equipment inspection and maintenance

Problem: Equipment aging, component damage, or overloading may cause chain breakage, hook detachment, or brake failure.

Solution:

Pre use inspection: Check whether the hook has cracks or deformations, and whether the safety buckle can be closed normally; Check whether the chain/wire rope is broken, rusted or worn; Test the brake sensitivity of the manual hoist; Confirm that the fixing screws of the column are not loose and the cantilever rotates smoothly without any jamming.

Regular maintenance: Check the chains and hooks weekly, tighten the screws of the columns monthly; Add lubricating oil to the rotating bearings and gears every month; When not in use for a long time, put away the chain and apply rust proof oil, and store it in a dry place.

Overloading is prohibited: The load-bearing capacity marked on the equipment is the bottom line. For example, if it is marked as 1 ton, it cannot lift 1.2 tons. Overloading can cause the chain to break or the column to tilt.

Problem: Improper selection of lifting equipment, such as using damaged steel wire ropes or slings that do not meet specifications.

Solution:

Select appropriate lifting equipment and ropes based on the weight and shape of the lifted object to ensure even force distribution.

When the number of broken wires in the steel wire rope reaches 10% of the total number of wires or the diameter decreases by 7%, it needs to be scrapped; When the opening degree of the hook exceeds 15% of the original size or there are cracks or deformations on the surface, it needs to be replaced.

2、 Operating standards

Problem: Diagonal pulling, overloading, or standing under suspended objects can easily cause heavy objects to shake, fall, or injure people.

Solution:

Vertical lifting: Only heavy objects can be lifted vertically, and diagonal pulling can cause uneven force on the chain, which may cause the heavy object to shake and collide with people.

Overloading is prohibited: strictly operate within the load-bearing range indicated on the equipment, leaving a margin (such as selecting 1 ton of equipment for a normal lifting of 300 pounds).

Personnel avoidance: It is strictly prohibited to stand under heavy objects. Be vigilant during operation and avoid lucky mentality such as "moving slowly".

Problem: When the operation is interrupted, heavy objects are suspended or the equipment is not properly secured.

Solution:

When the lifting is interrupted, the heavy object cannot be suspended in the air and needs to be lowered to the ground or temporarily fixed (such as supported by jacks or sleepers).

When not in use for a long time, retract the chain, apply rust proof oil to metal parts, and store in a dry place.

Problem: Failure to conduct trial lifting or excessive operation speed, resulting in equipment loss of control.

Solution:

Trial lifting procedure: Before lifting, lift the heavy object 200-300mm off the ground, stay for 10-30 seconds, check the force on the lifting device, equipment stability, and braking performance, and confirm that there are no abnormalities before slowly lifting.

Smooth operation: Lifting, lowering, and turning should be smooth, and sudden acceleration, sudden stop, or sudden directional changes are prohibited.

3、 Environmental factors

Problem: The ground is uneven or the bearing capacity is insufficient, resulting in equipment overturning.

Solution:

The mobile manual hoist should be placed on a level ground to avoid tipping over.

Verify the ground bearing capacity of the work area, ensure the stability of the foundation, and if necessary, lay steel plates or roadbed boxes.

Problem: The homework scope is close to high-voltage power lines, causing electric shock accidents.

Solution:

The homework should be kept away from electrical wires to avoid contact with high voltage lines by cantilevers or heavy objects.

Identify the voltage level and overhead height of the high-voltage line, and maintain a dynamic safe distance (which can be monitored using a laser rangefinder).

Problem: Operation in severe weather (such as strong wind and rainstorm) increases risks.

Solution:

Open hoisting is prohibited in case of strong wind above level 6, rainstorm, dense fog, thunder and lightning, etc.

In high temperature (≥ 35 ℃) or low temperature (≤ -20 ℃) environments, it is necessary to adjust the operation time, strengthen equipment lubrication, and personnel protection.

4、 Personnel Qualification and Training

Problem: The operators have not received professional training and lack safety awareness or operational skills.

Solution:

Operators need to hold relevant operation certificates and be familiar with the operating principles and control device usage methods of the equipment.

Regularly organize safety training and emergency drills to enhance emergency response capabilities.

Clearly define the responsibilities of each personnel (such as drivers, commanders, and riggers) to ensure unified command and clear signals.

Problem: Poor communication or command errors leading to operational confusion.

Solution:

Use standardized instructions and signal systems (such as flags, gestures, intercoms) to ensure that all relevant personnel understand and execute them.

The commanding personnel should stand in a safe position within the driver's line of sight, with clear and unified signals.
